Travel to the Isle of Mull inevitably involves a sea crossing – usually via one of the regular ferries, which are able to transport motor vehicles. There is also a relatively new seaplane service to Tobermory for those that can afford it, operated by Loch Lomond Seaplanes; if you fancy the ultimate service, you could even charter one of their planes to take you from Glasgow directly to Bunessan Pier, which is a short stroll away from the cottages! There is also an airfield at Glenforsa on the East of the island, for those that have their own light aircraft.

The ferries to and from the Isle of Mull are operated by Caledonian Macbrayne. By far the most popular route is from Oban on the mainland to Craignure on the east of Mull. This ferry takes approximately 40 minutes for the crossing, and advanced booking is strongly advised in the holiday season. There is a rather smaller car ferry that operates from Lochaline on the Morvern peninsula to Fishnish on Mull; this is a much shorter crossing, taking only 15 minutes. Reservations cannot be made, and the ferry operates on a “first come, first served” basis. A third car ferry operates between Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula to Tobermoray; this route takes about 35 minutes. Again, the ferry operates on a “first come, first served” basis.

If you plan to travel without a car, there are regular train and coach services to Oban from Glasgow operated by Scotrail and Citylink. If you wish to hire a car for you holiday on the island, this can be arranged through Mull Self Drive.

The island’s bus service provides transport between Tobermory and Craignure and between Craignure and Fionnphort. The latter service passes the entrance to Suidhe Farm Cottages.

There are a number of taxi operators on the Isle of Mull; Mull Taxi Service operates out of Tobermory, David Greenhalgh operates a taxi service based near Bunessan, and there are others.

Getting to Bunessan by car – the quick version

If you are crossing from Ardnamurchan (Kilchoan) to Tobermory, take the A848 South to Salen, where it becomes the A849. If you are crossing from Morvern (Lochaline) to Fishnish, the road from the ferry is the A884; this joins the A849 after a mile or so, at which point you turn left. In either case, continue South on the A849 to Craignure, which is where the ferry from Oban will arrive. Continue along the A849, ignoring all turnings to the left or right. After approximately 30 miles, you pass through the village of Bunessan; the road follows the coastline through the village and past Bunessan Pier, then turns left and climbs uphill past the cemetery. Shortly after the turn-off to the cemetery you will see the sign for Suidhe Farm Cottages, and the entrance on the right hand side, over a cattle grid. Each cottage has two car parking spaces.
